Executive Council

The executive council is charged with steering STC RMC priorities, and executive council officers serve as resources for chapter members. The STC RMC executive council consists of the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and past president. Members of the executive council are volunteers who were nominated and and elected to take a position.

Run for Office

President

Term: 1 year (automatically advances to Past President for 1 additional year)

Note: The vice president automatically moves to the position of president for the year following their election as VP, and continues to serve for a third year in the role of immediate past president as a voting member of the executive council. Because of the succession rules, the annual STC RMC ballot does not include candidates for the office of president.

Monthly commitment: 20+ hours (typically 3-6 hours per week)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Help form chapter policy, goals, and objectives
  • Write and publish the monthly eblast to all chapter members
  • Conduct meetings of the chapter administrative council
  • Preside and speak at chapter meetings
  • Prepare annual report for annual business meeting
  • Represent RMC for all external inquiries
  • Support chapter community members
  • Assign duties to officers and appoint assistants or committees as needed
  • Supply guidelines for budgets, expenditures, and other fiscal activities
  • Share ideas with other chapter leaders and submit reports to the STC leadership

Vice President

Term: 1 year (automatically advances to President and then Past President over the next 2 years)

Monthly commitment: 3-10 hours, including monthly Council meeting (typically 2-4 hours per week)

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Help form chapter policy, goals, and objectives
  • Participate in council and chapter meetings to gain experience and get a feel for the committees and procedures
  • Attend chapter events and welcome members
  • Support action items of council members
  • Identify possible committee managers and develop plans for the next term
  • Manage the Chapter Achievement Award (CAA) process and complete the application
  • Act as liaison with local universities and student chapters as needed
  • Demonstrate the enthusiasm, energy, responsibility, and problem-solving skills necessary to assume the duties of chapter president when needed

Treasurer

Term: 1 program year (September to May)

Monthly commitment: 2-5 hours, including monthly Council meeting

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Using your working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, establish and monitor a chapter budget for the fiscal year from a template provided by STC International
  • Submit required reports to STC International
  • Track and manage monthly income and expenses, and prepare detailed year-end report
  • Maintain checking and savings accounts
  • Deposit chapter funds and pay invoices
  • Maintain all chapter subscriptions and contracts

Benefits: As a voting member of the Executive Council, you have an important voice in Chapter decisions. Communicate and develop relationships with key staff within the STC organization. Learn about the financial requirements and processes of a nonprofit organization.

Secretary

Term: 1 program year (September to May)

Monthly commitment: 2-3 hours, including monthly Council meeting

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Take minutes and track action items at administrative council and other chapter meetings (or arrange for a substitute)
  • Prepare, distribute for review, and post corrected copies of the minutes
  • Create and post social media content using social media tools
  • Prepare correspondence related to chapter business as needed

Benefits: As a voting member of the Executive Council, you have an important voice in Chapter decisions. Build your organization, communication, and meeting management tools. Exercise creativity and follow a content strategy with social media posts.

Past President

Term: 1 year after President year 

Monthly commitment: 3-10 hours, including monthly Council meeting (typically 1-2 hours per week)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Advise and mentor the vice president
  • Assist with completing chapter goals and objectives
  • Continue to display all the good qualities of the VP/President
  • Serve as a voting member of the executive council
