Mailing List

We have an Internet mailing list exclusively for STC Rocky Mountain members and student members. We use this list to ask each other for advice, exchange job leads, and so on.

If you'd like to learn more about mailing lists, read these questions and answers. If you're an STC RMC member and you're already familiar with mailing lists, skip to How Do I Join?

Why do we need a mailing list?

One of the best things about STC membership is discussing technical communication with our peers:

"How can I convert FrameMaker to HTML?"
"Where can I find a boilerplate contract?"
"I'm looking for work; has anyone heard anything?"

To have these discussions, we typically go to a chapter meeting. For the Rocky Mountain Chapter, though, this can be difficult. Our members work all over the Front Range, from Parker to Laramie, from Scottsbluff to Idaho Springs. We work a lot of overtime. And sometimes we need answers right away. Nothing can replace the face-to-face contact we get at STC meetings, but now we have an additional way to communicate: the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter's Internet mailing list.

This list is exclusively for members and student members of the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter. The list server is hosted by Colorado Online.

What is a mailing list?

A mailing list lets you send email to a whole bunch of people at one time. So with a single email message to our STC RMC list, you can reach every STC Rocky Mountain Chapter member who belongs to the list.

How do mailing lists work?

After you're subscribed, you can easily send email to every member of our list.  Simply address your message to the list name -- techcomm-discuss@stcrmc.org. That's a lot easier than typing 437 email addresses!

Why should I join the STC RMC mailing list?

It's an easy, efficient way to reach local and regional technical communicators. For example, you might ask questions or make requests:

  • Questions about freelancing
  • Questions about becoming a technical communicator
  • Requests for brainstorming on technical, editorial, or design problems (we wrote this article by asking list members for suggestions!)

Or you might make announcements:

  • Meeting announcements
  • Announcements of upcoming seminars

Do I need to have access to the World Wide Web to use this list?

Nope. All you need is plain old email.

Is the STC RMC mailing list the same as the TECHWR-L mailing list?

They are both mailing lists for technical communicators, but with different membership.

TECHWR-L is open to anyone in the world. The STC RMC mailing list is only for STC Rocky Mountain Chapter members, and it has different rules; you'll see these rules when you join the list.

How do I join the mailing list?

Simply send an email request to the list server administrator, Alana Cote, at administrator@stcrmc.org.

The list server administrator will verify that you are a member of the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter, then add you to the mailing list.

  • NEW STC MEMBERS: After you send in your STC dues, please wait a couple of weeks before contacting the list server administrator. This will give STC Headquarters time to process your membership application.

See you on the list!

Comments?
We strive to provide you with useful and up-to-date information. Please e-mail Alana Cote to share your experiences.
