A Conversation with Merrelyn Emery

As we consider topics such as... Open Systems, Democratic Workplaces, Changing the World!

Our special guest, Dr. Merrelyn Emery, is traveling from Australia to conduct training sessions at the International Institute for Resource Management, New Mexico State University. We are fortunate that she is including Denver in her itinerary and excited that she has agreed to spend time with CODN and our friends.

Merrelyn Emery’s contribution to the field includes groundbreaking work in transforming bureaucracies to democratic workplaces -- and in participative strategic planning, particularly with communities. She is naturally a touchstone to the work of Fred Emery, and is a tremendous resource for us to understand the work of Fred, Eric Trist and others. Merrelyn has a life-long commitment to participative democracy and has invaluable insight on open systems and adaptability.

Merrelyn Emery has been involved in the development of the Search Conference and Participative Design methodology for over thirty years. Her most recent efforts have focused on the development and refinement of effective training programs for both methods.

Merrelyn is co-author of the book The Search Conference: A Powerful Method for Organizational Change and Community Action, 1996, Jossey-Bass, publisher. She is editor and contributor to Participative Design for Participative Democracy, updated 1993 (Centre for Continuing Education, Australian National University.)
