Without volunteers, you wouldn’t be reading this, couldn’t visit our Web site, and probably wouldn’t know what our chapter is doing. Our many volunteers keep the great programs coming, provide information to new and potential members, keep the treasury, take and send the minutes, manage the SIGs, plan and carry out the annual local competition (and forward winning entries to international), and provide many other tasks that are too numerous to mention here. In addition, last fall the Region 7 Conference committee planned and hosted a successful Region 7 conference! Congratulations everyone! To quote David Garrett, one of our illustrious volunteers, as he stated in the May 1997 issue of technicalities, “There are two sides to volunteerism, which explains why it requires management. First is the problem of getting volunteers for jobs. Many of the wonderful people who manage our projects are comfortable working long and hard to accomplish their tasks, but they are less comfortable asking for volunteers to help them. This creates a situation where the hard-working volunteers get burned out because they’ve taken on too much. ...” We hope you haven’t taken on too much. If you’d like to volunteer, we hope you will contact one of us. We would like to thank all our hard-working volunteers at the June 17th meeting. Please come to the June meeting to support our volunteers and to hear Lila Laux of US West discuss how we communicate with diverse populations.
