Hoerter Scholarship Winners Announced

Scholarship recipient Dana Franklin, Education Committee Manager Mark Werner, scholarship recipient Elizabeth Fisher, STC RMC President Jay Mead.

Two students received the 1999 George E. Hoerter Professional Development Award/Scholarship in the May chapter meeting. Dana Franklin, a student at the University of Colorado at Denver; and Elizabeth Fisher, a student at the Metropolitan State College of Denver are this year’s winners. Each will receive $750.00 and a certificate.

Ms. Fisher has held positions as an Editorial Assistant and Manager of Corporate Communications at Business Communications Company, Inc; and as a free-lance technical communicator. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Communications and a minor in Computer Information Systems from the Metropolitan State College of Denver. She recently published an article titled, “Electronic Mail: Technologies, Applications, What’s Ahead.”

Ms. Franklin has held positions as a technical writer at Colorado Memory Systems, Resource Systems Management, Inc., and DLS Group. She has also been an editor and writer for Lucent Technologies, the Center for Performance Assessment, and the American Statistical Association. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Communications from the Metropolitan State College of Denver. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Technical Communication from the University of Colorado at Denver. In addition, she has published two conference papers with Russel Stoner and Sylvia Walker.

The George E. Hoerter Professional Development Award/Scholarship is named after George E. Hoerter, a member of our chapter. Mr. Hoerter has served the STC since 1975. In 1994 he was elected an STC Fellow and was presented the STC President’s Award. Mr. Hoerter has served as Treasurer at both the local and international level, as President and Vice President at the local level, and in a variety of other positions at both the local and national levels.
