What is the Professional Web?

by Linda G. Gallagher

The Professional Web is: a) a group of highly paid web site designers, b) a group of highly skilled spiders, c) an organization of organizations in the Denver area, or d) a group of ingenious liars who weave tangled webs frequently.

If you guessed c), congratulations! You’re right. But, you’re asking yourself, “What is an organization of organizations?” Well, I'll explain.

The Professional Web (Pro Web) started informally in the summer of 1995 when members of a few of the organizations listed below got together to discuss common issues their organizations faced. The group started meeting more formally in early 1996 to share information and help members avoid reinventing the wheel each time they confronted new challenges.

The STC Rocky Mountain chapter has participated in the Pro Web since its inception. Nancy Walters was our first representative and participated in those initial meetings. She remembers the group discussing what it should do and how it should be organized, but everyone agreeing that there was value in coming together.

Typically, each member organization sends one or two representatives to the monthly meetings, at which we discuss the Pro Web’s activities and plans for the future.

Current members of the Pro Web include:

  • ASTD-American Society for Training and Development
  • CIN-Colorado Issues Network
  • CODN-Colorado Organizational Development Network
  • CCMO-Colorado Council of Mediators and Mediation Organizations
  • EAPA-Employee Assistance Professionals Association
  • ISPI-International Society for Performance and Instruction
  • IST-Information Systems Trainers
  • STC-Society for Technical Communication

Pro Web Benefits

One of the benefits of membership in the Pro Web is reciprocity among the organizations. As an STC RMC member, you can attend the meetings, workshops, and seminars sponsored by any other Pro Web organization as if you were a member. This lets you pay the member rate for events.

The Pro Web hopes to create a joint calendar of upcoming events on a new Web site in the first half of this year. Its availability will be announced via the STC RMC listserv, newsletter, and Web site. In the meantime, information about meetings will be shared via the Pro Web listserv.

Among the Pro Web’s past activities is the Leadership Forum held last May. The forum was a unique event that brought together officers, board members, and committee managers from many related professional associations to discuss common issues. Several officers and committee chairs from our chapter attended and benefited from hearing how other organizations handle a variety of issues ranging from managing volunteers to developing a speakers bureau.

The event was so well received that Pro Web members are planning another Leadership Forum this April. People who are on the STC RMC mailing list will be receiving details.

The Pro Web hopes to sponsor a joint meeting on a topic of interest to all member organizations in 1999. However, this is a daunting task given the busy schedules of our program managers, the diversity of the organizations, and the logistics involved.

You can learn more about the current Pro Web members at the Pro Web Web site: http://www.cudenver.edu/public/education/profweb/proweb.html

Please note that the information may not be up to date (I’ve sent in an update for the STC information). If you have difficulty contacting an organization based on what’s on the site, please let me know and I’ll ask the current Pro Web representative to help you.

If you would like to know more about the Pro Web, please feel free to contact me (lindag@techcomplus.com or 303.450.9076).

The Professional Web’s mission: To provide a forum for collaboration and partnering across professional organizations. We will do this by sharing experiences, solutions, and resources and by cross-publicizing and co-sponsoring organization events.

Linda G. Gallagher is the STC RMC representative to the Pro Web. She is also an independent technical communicator and heads the Contracting and Independent Consulting (CIC) SIG for the chapter. She specializes in creating user documentation that is easy to use and understand.
