Take a Trip Down the Aviation Trail

by Amy M. Hess, STC Southwestern Ohio Chapter

After attending the STC 46th Annual Conference in May, you might want to visit the hometown of aeronautical geniuses Orville and Wilbur Wright. Dayton, Birthplace of Aviation, is less than an hour’s drive from the Cincinnati Convention Center. You can explore the area by driving the Aviation Trail, a loose network of 47 historical aviation attractions in and around Dayton.

Don’t miss the Wright Cycle Company, where the brothers manufactured and sold their own brand of bicycle. You’ll see a replica of the machinery the brothers used and original bicycles from the late 1800s.

Several trail sites are on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Two of special interest are the United States Air Force Museum and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field. The United States Air Force Museum is the world’s oldest and largest military aviation museum. Exhibits include a reproduction of the Wright 1909 Military Flyer, a retired Air Force One presidential plane, and the Apollo 15 space capsule that circled the moon in 1971.

Huffman Prairie Flying Field is the place where the Wrights perfected their first airplane machine and their piloting skills. In 1905, the Wright Flyer III took off and landed 33 consecutive times without mishap or damage. The plane could bank, turn, fly circles and figure eights, and stay aloft for more than 30 minutes.

Other sites of interest on the Aviation Trail include the WACO Historical Society Museum in Troy and the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta. For information on the Aviation Trail, call the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau at 800.221.8235 outside of Ohio.
