Bill Mattingly's Personal Side

by Beth Dougherty

In the November technicalities, George Hoerter wrote about Bill Mattingly’s accomplishments and contributions to the STC. My view of Bill’s contributions is more personal—I was one of the lucky people Bill Mattingly mentored. More than technical or hard writing skills, Bill taught me an approach to the profession, a belief that work and life should be fun and lived with passion. Bill brought this passion to everything he did whether it was a consulting project, a conference, or a cross-country train trip.

I saw Bill through the eyes of clients, coworkers, and STC associates. The greatest tribute to Bill is the way, at the mention of his name, a person’s eyes light up or a quiet smile springs forth. I know that person, like me, is remembering a favorite Mattingly story or a shared moment. Bill touched so many of us professionally or personally.

As Region 7 director/sponsor, Bill focused on the role of sponsor, coach, patron, and benefactor—fostering growth and development in individuals and organizations. He always made time for those who had an idea or who were searching for answers. He took an interest in all kinds of people for what they were and could be. Whether they were students, members of the profession, neighbors, or casual acquaintances, Bill helped them to see possibilities and to chart a course to make the dream a reality.

At one of the Region 7 conferences, I came upon Bill in earnest conversation with a few members of a smaller chapter in the region. They wanted to host the conference but were daunted by the resources it would take. Bill spent time discussing plans and alternatives with them, suggesting resources they could draw on from other chapters. His enthusiasm for their goals was infectious. I think we will all miss Bill, but his influence will live on.
