Is This Visual Literacy?

by Laurie Lamar

"Visual literacy” is a popular concept. Online bookstore Amazon.com sells 22 books about visual literacy; several colleges teach it; STC RMC member William Horton offers a course in it, too. Definitions of “visual literacy” vary, but it generally means:
  • The ability to express concepts visually, or
  • The ability to describe images’ components and their interactions.

What this article proposes—paying attention to graphics in an organized way—is a small part of visual literacy as a whole. It’s only a beginnng, but an important one.
