William A. Mattingly

by George E. Hoerter, STC Fellow

The death of former STC Region 7 Director/Sponsor and Rocky Mountain Chapter President William A. Matttingly was announced at the closing session of the STC Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, in May. The chapter, region, and the entire STC organization have lost a friend and a supporter for professionalism in technical communicators.

In 1993 Bill was honored when he was elected an STC Associate Fellow. The citation on the plaque he was presented read “For continuous and outstanding contributions to the technical communication profession and for distinguished service to the Society for Technical Communication.”

For the Rocky Mountain Chapter, Bill served as vice president (1981-82) and president (1983-85). He was a member of the executive council (1981-87 and 1990-92), program manager (1981-83 and 1990-92), conference manager (1986-87), competition judge (1979-87), documentation management SIG manager/creator (1989), and legal issues seminar and Berlitz Translation seminars manager (1992). In 1991 Bill received the STC Distinguished Chapter Service Award. He also received numerous technical publication awards through the chapter’s technical publication competitions.

At the international level, Bill was manager of the manual evaluation workshops at the 33rd STC Annual Conference (Detroit), arrangements manager for the 34th STC Annual Conference (Denver), troubleshooter (arrangements) for the 35th STC Annual Conference (Philadelphia), and special events coordinator for the 39th STC Annual Conference (Atlanta) and the 40th STC Annual Conference (Dallas).

From 1978 until his retirement, Bill was a vice president and co-owner of Comtech Services, Inc and was president of Mattingly & Associates. From 1967-87, Bill was an associate professor of English at the Colorado Schools of Mines.

Bill mentored several technical communicators in his career and his contributions to both the profession and people whose lives he touched will be sorely missed.
