Advanced Techniques for Online Documents

by Laurence Hoess

Welcome back from your summer hiatus. I hope everyone enjoyed the summer and is ready to start another season of chapter meetings.

To help reduce the confusion of finding the chapter meetings every month, the STC RMC board decided to hold most of the meetings at three locations except when special events are planned, such as the Region 7 conference and the Awards reception.

The chapter meetings will take place at one of the following locations every month: StorageTek in Louisville, Tivoli Center in downtown Denver, and J.D. Edwards in south Denver.

September's Meeting

Are you ready to learn some advanced techniques for online documentation? Larry Prado and Catherine Margolin will teach us how to make our PDF and/or WinHelp files graphical, interactive, and visually appealing. Just because HTML Help isn't ready for prime time doesn't mean that you can't create online help systems that have a web-page look and feel.

Larry Prado and Catherine Margolin have been creating online help and onine training systems in WinHelp- based help and in FrameMaker/PDF format for a number of years. With a little effort and some chutzpah, you can create help systems with links, menus, color, sidebar navigational systems, background graphics, and more. Your online help systems can have all of the visual elements you might see in an HTML Help system. Yes, even WinHelp can do this.

Catherine and Larry will show you some of the projects they have been developing, including an online style guide, a Mortgage company online reference system, and WinHelp help systems for several high-tech products. They will share some of their secrets (and some of the frustrations) gained from years of online experience.
