Region 7 Conference Explores the Medium Formerly Known as Print: New Directions in Technical Communication

by Jere L. Paulmeno

Change blows like a constant wind these days, away from print and towards a new digital era in technical communication. You can let it rattle your windows or you can set sail to new opportunities. Let the STC Region 7 Conference help you put the wind to your back and set your own course for the future beyond print.

The Region 7 Conference, hosted by the STC Rocky Mountain Chapter, will be held October 15 - 17, 1998, at the Executive Tower Inn in Denver, Colorado. Entitled "The Medium Formerly Known as Print: New Directions in Technical Communication," the Region 7 Conference approaches its theme from the standpoint of the basic communication principles you already know. Two full days of Conference presentations are organized into Toolbox Topics addressing work skills, management practices, and technologies in the new digital medium. You'll learn the latest about how to expand your role into nonprint channels such as video, multimedia, online documentation, computer-based instruction, and Web publishing.

Of course, you want to thrive, not just cope, in the new digital world. That's why you'll appreciate the deeper perspective of Conference keynoter and prominent techno- philosopher Richard Thieme. The digital medium, says Thieme, changes us as we use it, transforming our personal and professional lives. He'll offer practical strategies, which are also personal, for working effectively on the edge of change.

To close out the Conference, you'll learn what history teaches us from past periods of human change. Dr. William Boast, well-known consultant to global corporations and author of Masters of Change (1997), has studied the lives of leaders who achieved greatness during turbulent times throughout history. He’ ll share some lessons you can use to take charge of your own life in the midst of transforming change.

Don’ t just listen to the wind rattle your windows. Zip up your jacket (or you may be enjoying our Indian Summer by then) and come enjoy the eaterh! For complete details and to register, visit the Region 7 Conference Web site (hyyp://stcrmc.org/region 7/conference.htm).
