Researches, writes, and compiles reference material using complex desktop publishing or word processing packages. The role entails editing English academic research papers on various subjects in physical sciences written by non-native speakers of English.

The editor would need to have impeccable spelling and grammar and the ability to write clear, concise, and extremely polite notes to the author for the clarification of any ambiguities in the text. Experience in editing/writing is a plus.

If you have access to the Chicago Manual of Style and/or other academic style manuals or are aware of the differences between British and American English (in terms of spelling and punctuation), please be sure to mention it in your application.

Preference is given to native speakers of English. An editing test will be administered to determine your quality and to negotiate a rate. The same test is given to all candidates; it is not part of a live document. All who qualify will be selected.

Salary

We currently have two levels of service: standard copyediting and a premium service (different from substantive editing). Our rates tend to be low for the first service and are more competitive for the second. We plan to add a proofreading service and a substantive editing service as well at some point. Rates are negotiated with each individual according to number of years of editing experience (particularly with ESL documents), quality of the edit, and quality in comparison to our other editors. Please state your minimum acceptable rate per word when you bid.

Qualifications

We require candidates that have qualifications in subjects such as engineering, computer science, physics, geology, and chemistry. We prefer candidates with some level of experience in editing documents written by non-native speakers of English, but this is not a strict requirement.

Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer duties include:

  • Create new courses, including: research, design, writing, editing and defining multimedia for inclusion. Training deliverable formats include Framemaker, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, Flash, DreamWeaver, and various other tools.
  • Review and edit lesson material as needed to update existing courses.
  • Create, review, and edit course exams and review questions.
  • Adhere to the Quantum design methodologies in the creation, review, and editing of new and existing courses.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on training materials created by other instructional designers.
  • Perform rudimentary PC file management.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of experience in all aspects of instructional design (research, analysis, design, development, delivery, and evaluation) of both print and electronically delivered training deliverables. Minimum three years experience with technical course development. Storage networking experience desired.
  • Master's degree in Instructional Technology, Education, Organizational Development, Performance Improvement, or other related field.
  • Ability to apply adult learning principles to the design of training materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Highly organized, with project and process management abilities.
  • Evidence of strong analytical, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and meet deadlines on time.
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe FrameMaker. SumTotal experience desired.
  • The ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • A team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to do whatever is needed, in a sometimes fast changing environment, to achieve project goals and requirements.
