The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for creating content to help users understand our Exelis VIS products, including ENVI, IDL, and E3De. Projects may include API reference material, online help, tutorials, white papers, screencasts and videos, web site content, mobile applications, etc. This professional communicates and interacts with software developers, quality engineers, technical support staff and customers.  The Senior Technical Writer works with supervision from the User Assistance Manager, and also takes technical direction from development teams.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
 
·         Work as part of collaborative development teams in an Agile environment
·         Understand different user groups and develop content from their perspective

·        Develop content from the customers’ perspective; writing with the goal of helping users understand and use the products effectively

·         Create working code examples

·         Assist in the design and implementation of user interfaces and programming language routines
·         Develop expertise in our software products
·         Review and edit content for internal and external audiences

Minimum Skills and Qualifications:
 
·         5-9 years’ technical writing experience
·         Bachelor's degree in technical writing, English, the sciences, or equivalent experienc
·         Understanding of software and documentation development processes
·        Comfortable with programming languages and complex interfaces
·         Excellent writing skills
·         Strong editing skills
·         Proven experience with publishing tools
·         Ability to learn and understand software applications quickly
 
Desired Skills:
 
·         Science education or experience
·         Proven experience with Madcap Flare, HTML coding, Camtasia, graphics programs
·         Experience working with multiple operating systems (Mac, UNIX)
·         Experience producing screencasts or videos
·         Graphic design and development experience
·         Programming experience with languages such as IDL, C++, Python, JavaScript

Duties and Responsibilities:

LSI Corporation is looking for a senior technical writer based in Colorado Springs, CO with significant experience in computer hardware or software documentation development, preferably for an engineering audience.

This position requires a self-directed technical writer who can write, update, edit, review and help plan user documentation to support storage components products. Write clear and concise documentation. Organize material and complete technical writing assignments according to set standard templates, style guidelines, and publication processes.

Work with writers/editors across geographies in a team environment. Extract product information from interaction with the engineering and technical publications teams and from technical/product specifications, previous generation product documentation, and presentations. Develop an understanding of the customer use model and make recommendations for improvements in documentation. Experience in documenting software and highly complex IT hardware systems and architectures is a plus.

A successful candidate must be able to handle documentation projects from start to finish with minimal direction, while managing schedules and meeting deadlines. The position requires the ability to multitask effectively, despite ambiguity, and thrive in a fast-paced, time compressed, and dynamic environment. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with subject matter experts, project managers and other team members.

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of the concepts involved in single sourcing and familiarity with content management and XML-based editors is also a plus.
  • Experience with DITA/structured authoring and HTML is a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe FrameMaker and Quadralay WebWorks desired.
  • Knowledge of PC platforms, XML, and content management systems would be helpful.

A Bachelor's degree in technical communication, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, or computer science or related field is required.
