Technicalities vs. the personal blog

The new site for the Rocky Mountain Chapter (RMC) of the Society of Technical Communication (STC) provides the ability for each member to write personal blogs. This feature is not something that can be disabled, so we thought it wise to discuss how we envision the distinction between these two blogs.

Technicalities is the newsletter of STC RMC. It was moved to a hosted WordPress blog format in 2008, which allows many chapter members to contribute on a schedule that is well-suited to them. Some contributors submit regular entries while others have only contributed one article. Anyone can contribute articles by sending either content or a request to be set up with a blog account to news@stcrmc.org. All articles are subject to review by Technicalities editors. Technicalities articles are categorized by subject matter and date using tags to create monthly editions of a newsletter. They are indexed and searchable with any internet browser.

Personal blogs can be written by any chapter member with a login to this site. These blogs are stored in the content management system (CMS) used to host the STC RMC website. Blogging on this site should be limited to technical communication topics. Before writing a personal blog, simply ask yourself if this blog entry would be a good contribution to the STC RMC's newsletter. If the answer is yes, please consider writing it for Technicalities instead of writing it as a personal blog entry. This makes for the most efficient use of time and publicly credits you as a contributor to our organization's electronic publication.
